Difference b/w CAP and INAP

22 Jan

Both INAP as well as CAP are signalling protocols which are used in Intelligent Networks but the differrence b/w the two is that INAP is for fixed netwoks whereas CAP is extended version of INAP and is used  for mobile networks.

*Remember the calling cards which were used for  landlines were using INAP

    What is INAP,…what is CAP?

Intelligent Network Application Part (INAP) is signalling protocol used for Intelligent Networks and is a part of SS7 protocol suite and intelligent network (IN) is a n/w to provide subscribers services other than just standard GSM services. Prepaid calling,Account calling card etc comes under IN services.
CAP(Camel application part):CAP is just extended version of INAP , just like INAP ,CAP is also used for IN.Now a days mostly CAP is used because it supports both fixed as well as Mobile n/w whereas INAP was for fixed n/w.

    >>>>>CAMEL is Customized Application for the Mobile network Enhanced Logic
    >>>>>SCP is Service control point which is controlling part in Intellegent Network which also required data base service which is known as SDP(Service data point )

one example of CAP comes when prepaid subscriber makes a call.
1)The call reaches the MSC of that prepaid subscriber,
2)MSC will know that its a Prepaid Subscriber
3)If its a prepaid subscriber then pre call balance check is required .
4)MSC sends a query to SCP (Service Control Point ) checks for the balance check of the subscriber.
5)If balance is sufficient then MSC can continue with the call otherwise LOW BALANCE will be played .

********So the queries and messages b/w MSC and SCP is using CAP

      5) *LOW BALANCE announcement will be played .

Thats a nice article about IN or intelligent networks.. a very amazing and nice feature in telecom where charging is done automatically. Will be nice to hear more about it in near future. nice article rohit :)

@mohit :for real time charging time, there are events which tells IN(or lets say SCP for this case) to start charging ,or to stop charging .

1)After receving ANM (answer message) form B-party MSC ,A-party MSC will send an event to SCP to start charging .
      2)SCP will do charging.
3)When either of MSC’s ends the call or gives a release then,A-party MSC will again send an event to SCP to stop charging.

**** These events are called as Detection Points
